Alright, this is a fairly comprehensive list of all the active launch sites on Earth as of the year 1999, in Overheaven’s alternate history timeline. Realistically, most of these only launch satellites, and the ones that do shoot people into space are probably doing so with capsules, though the more developed countries have fleets of reusable space planes (both manned and unmanned). The overwhelming majority of launches are going to be routine unmanned, reusable rockets sending up supplies or satellites or space station construction materials, and then touching back down on the launch pad like SpaceX's BFR (we get that level of reusable launch vehicle by the mid/late 70's, rather than the late 2010’s - amazing what you can accomplish when two superpowers feel the need to put thousands of nukes in orbit, because the 1967 Outer Space Treaty never happened). Many are run by the military or public-sector space agencies like the ESA, NASA, the Commonwealth Space Program, or Soyuzcosmos (the USSR's NASA counterpart), but I'm willing to bet that at least half (perhaps even two-thirds) of these are private-sector operations, and most non-military public-sector launch sites do private-sector flights as well. Rockets like the Sea Dragon theoretically don't really need launchpads, and while there might be launch facilities which specialize with Sea Dragon-type rockets, I think that the smaller spaceflight companies would just buy one of these rockets, strap the payload on top, and tow it out to sea near the equator for launch. And there's also air-launched sub-orbital vehicles (stuff like Virgin Galactic's White Knight), which I wager could take off from regular old airports on the backs of Boeing 747's or Antonov 124's. Some of these are existing rocket launch sites (mostly for sounding rockets), which I've turned into full-on Cape Canaveral/Baikonur-type facilities, while others are proposed locations for launch sites, and some are just good ideas I figured would work but never appeared in our timeline. Anyway, I'm pretty sure this is enough space infrastructure to serve as the basis for a smoothly-running interplanetary civilization by 1999, with the Internet still in its infancy. In Overheaven’s alternate timeline, the lack of an OST leads to a more aggressive and ambitious space race. Men on on Mars by 1976, men on Venus by 1978, and the construction of huge nuclear missile platforms in orbit by both superpowers. By the late 70’s, space industry was just getting started, and by the 80’s, the “Space Boom” was in full swing, baby. Experimental atomic research, rotating space hotels, medical and chemical research labs in orbit, space manufacturing, solar power satellites, mining near-earth asteroids, space tourism, orbital fuel depots, telecom sats, space casinos, offworld banking, and so much more. By the late 1990’s, the idea of people working and even living in space is still exciting, but it’s also pretty damn normal now. With all these launches, plus material being extracted from Luna and near-Earth asteroids, I think it's perfectly feasible for there to be a few Stanford Toruses, and at least one O'Neill Cylinder, under construction in Earth orbit by '99. And as launch costs continue to plummet, expect the scale of humanity's ambitions to only escalate. And these are just the launch sites on Earth. I don't even know how many orbital launch facilities there'd be by this point - huge space stations building truly-massive vessels in zero-g with all those resources we're shooting up on what I imagine is a daily or even hourly basis; ships like those, built and fueled in orbit, would undoubtedly be able to reach Mars, Venus, Mercury, the Main Belt and Jupiter with relative ease. And everything I've stated here will only continue to grow at a geometric rate as more of the Solar System's resources are harnessed, spaceflight costs continue to drop, and technology continues to improve. And we’re not talking about Overheaven’s current year, which isn’t actually 1999. It’s 2185. Oh, right. Groups and Factions
New Paradise: Described by its leading chairmen to our paper, as the biggest and most chic entertainment resort Rustifac has ever seen, New Paradise has begun its building procedures. Spearheaded by Hotel California, whose head representative is Mr. Ace, who has openly and optimistically answered our every question, promising that the full blown experience should be up and fully running in the coming days. To all that wish to visit and enjoy the frenzied complex named the Strip, you must show proof that you are an economically successful individual at the entry gates, paying an entry fee of 500 scrap up front. Inside you shall be meet with 3 casinos, the leading Hotel California, the Sodom and Motel 9. There is also a luxurious marketplace and utility center within the Strip. While this fee might sound like a show killer for most, fear not as the generous Chairmen have said that they will be aiming to give everybody in the community a chance to enter their top deck lifestyle, by controlling a segment of the outskirts of town and provide free amenities for the general population. The outskirts of the Strip, named the Ghetto by the locals, is a no man's land, where plenty of aggressive gangs and packs of squatters have already settled down in. Here living is monitored but not restricted, says as long as you don't pose a threat to the families running the casinos on the Strip. City Of Polaris: Their soft footsteps, and even softer voices can soothe even the most seasoned badlands adventurer. The people of Polaris have proclaimed their goodwill to the island, and have promised to build a city whose heart will be to fully and unconditionally accept all lost travelers and humble people that come to their lands looking for comfort and security within their districts. The story told by the city's leader Gat36, has left us with quite an ethereal feel. Once lost travelers themselves, roaming the seas looking for a place they longed for but knew nothing about, the group stumbled upon another dark night, where they faithfully followed the stars and their mysterious ways. When they sailed almost under the shiniest star of all, they saw the island of Rustifac, and connecting immediately with this sign, they knew this was the home they so desperately had been looking for. They now aim that the City of Polaris can be the same for you. The Kingdom: As we walked through its temporary wooden gates, we knew we were in for quite the warm welcome. Receiving our party with pure cheer and joy was Eassimak, the leader of this settlement we had found ourselves in. The Kingdom, described by it's leaders and equally cheerful citizens, as a nation about being part of something bigger than oneself, all while rewarding arduous work with great progress to lead the island in a brighter, tighter and happier future. Planned is the construction of a city, protected by capable army, developed economically by a airport, and known for its leisure activities such as special events and games, featuring great prizes for the winners. Chemists: This group of studious and ingenuous scientists, known for their controversial scientific research and methods amidst the islands community, have begun building their main research facility, as they slowly but surely develop a proper basis of infrastructure, to house their diverse and extensive departments, covering almost every field of science known to man. The bright people of the Chemists spear headed by Head Researches, Dr. Edwin Wright and Dr. Bunsen Burns, have promised the island great scientifically advancements this era, a process that will improve general life quality for all inhabitants of Rustifac. Arathi Empire: The newly formed empire consisting of a series of highlands tribes from the far away island of Happis have congregated and come to Rustifac, after being driven away from their home island by a ruthless group of barbarians, leaving these poor but willing people with little on their person. Now driven by the determination of rising strong and mighty once more, the Arathi aim to restore the glory of their former empire, as they describe themselves as benevolent but firm people who will not hesitate to fight back against any and all aggression towards them and their allies. PitTown: This town composed of strong minded individuals has promised the island to deliver some of the best arena fighting we have seen in years. Led by Waggy, the town's development shall be centered around a large and near sacred arena that will host great fights to settle disputes, along with betting to further enrich the environment around the whole spectacle. Front de Liberation des Rustoquois: This faction, possessing quite a peculiar name, has announced and aimed to expand its numbers and influence through a mass distribution of propaganda apparatus. While the representatives of the movement say that they aim to solely spread their culture through mass information distribution, Faction leaders across the island have expressed their distaste towards the FLR's actions, as it has been rumored that they have been arming rebel movements, and have incentivized uprisings against the commanding forces of the aforementioned factions. Along with a fully structured social system, this front might become a seriously disruptive force for most of the large factions of the island, whose over all target audience is quite large. Minutemen of Bankstown: A group composed of hardened veterans of the Frontier wars, the Minutemen of Bankstown have announced their peaceful settlement here in Rustifac, where they have vowed to relinquish all their weaponry and their craft for war. Here they shall focus on peaceful trading and development, but have warned any potential wolves looking for a sweet spot within their ranks that if conflict does come knocking, they will be ready and willing to defend their lands with the very weapons they have buried deep down. Bloodtide: A nation almost lost to time itself, bloodtide has returned to the island 219 days after their original departure for reasons that are now mere folklore tales, as most people of island had not been alive to remember this once great faction. Having reached our lands with their glistering armor, they come with a promise of peaceful coexistence with the rest of islands factions. StilWater: Claiming to have come from an island eaten up by the ocean's wrath, Water now comes to Rustifac with a sense of superiority in their minds, telling all the natives here about how gracefully and swiftly they escaped the menacing storm back home. Aiming to show all of us what they had accomplished in their previous island, these proud folks have begun the construction of their main development buildings and living quarters. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
